Smart has announced that the order book for its new #1 electric SUV will open this December, with first deliveries scheduled for mid-2023. The launch of Smart #1 marks the brand's transition to an all-electric manufacturer, and the vehicle was developed under joint ownership by Daimler and Geely. The new Smart #1 is based on Geely's brand new electrical architecture called SEA. This will underpin the upcoming new Smart range, while #1 also sets the template for the brand's future design direction.
Smart #1 is installed with a 66 kWh battery, giving it a claimed range of up to 440 km (273 miles). Over time, more affordable options with smaller batteries will appear. With 150kW fast charging capability, a 66kWh car battery can be charged 10-80% in less than 30 minutes, while connecting to a 22kW AC charger will return 10-80% charge in about three hours.
The battery powers one rear motor producing 268 hp. and 343 Nm of torque, maximum speed of 180 km/h, with a weight of 1820 kg.
This modern exterior has been the focus of Smart, and the same is true inside, with a minimalist design and feel. On the dash is a central 12.8-inch touchscreen that also puts an emphasis on connectivity as the infotainment system can be updated via over-the-air software updates. It is joined by a 9.2-inch Full HD digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch head-up display.
Level 2 autonomous driving capability is part of the Advanced Driver Assistance System package, offering adaptive cruise control with stop and go technology, lane keeping assist, blind spot, highway and traffic jam assist, automatic parking and adaptive high beam headlights. Seven airbags are also included.
