The new round cells, which will have the same diameter of 46 millimeters and two different heights, are expected to increase energy density by more than 20 percent, improve charging speed by up to 30 percent, and increase range by up to 30 percent. To meet the demand for battery cells for the new class, BMW has already secured a double-digit, billion-euro contract with two partners to build battery cell factories: CATL and EVE Energy. Both partners will build two gigafactories each in China and Europe. Each battery plant will have a total annual capacity of up to 20 GWh.
The combination of next-generation BMW architecture and low-carbon, high-performance batteries will help both companies maintain a leading position in the transition to electrification of transport in Europe and around the world, CATL says.
